Motion & ghosting

Follow a moving block with your eyes. Look for a trailing shadow or a bright outline behind it.

Paused · Start when ready

Speed is measured in CSS pixels per second. Compare the same speed before and after adjusting your display’s overdrive setting.

How to check

  1. Start motion and follow a block at your usual viewing distance. Keep this browser tab visible.
  2. Try light, dark and gray backgrounds, then adjust speed. Use fullscreen to get a longer motion path.
  3. If your monitor has an overdrive setting, compare its options at the same refresh rate. Stop when you have enough information.

Know the limits

Ghosting is a trailing image associated with pixels taking time to change. Inverse ghosting is a bright or dark overshoot halo, often more visible with aggressive overdrive.

Browser stutter, eye-tracking blur, display persistence and pixel response can overlap. This tool cannot measure response time in milliseconds or isolate all causes of blur.

The animation pauses when the tab is hidden. It starts only when you choose to run it, including when reduced motion is preferred.

A useful question

Should I choose the highest overdrive setting?

Not necessarily. A stronger setting may reduce a trail but introduce an overshoot halo. Compare the options visually; the best setting can vary with refresh rate.
